What’s all this then ...could PC Styles capture an Oscar?

- From Caroline Graham IN LOS ANGELES

HIS mantelpiece already groans under the weight of awards including a Grammy, a Brit and honours from MTV and Ivor Novello – and now pop star Harry Styles is being tipped for an Oscar.

The 28-year-old’s performance alongside The Crown’s Emma Corrin and Rupert Everett in the upcoming drama My Policeman is being hailed as ‘masterful’ by Hollywood insiders. A producer for one major studio who saw an early screening of the £15million film told The Mail on Sunday: ‘If you think Harry Styles is big now, just wait. This performance will blow everybody’s socks off.

‘People were standing up and cheering him at the end of the screening. It’s a masterful performance and all the talk afterwards was about how he may get a Best Supporting Actor nomination at next year’s Oscars.’

Styles – whose highest profile previous role was in 2017’s Dunkirk – plays a homosexual policeman Tom Burgess who struggles to hide his sexuality after marrying wife Marion, played by Corrin, in the 1950s drama. His character falls madly in love with a museum curator called Patrick, played by Everett.

The source said: ‘Harry’s performance is raw and real. He puts his vulnerability on display for all to see. This is a break-out performance which has everyone in Hollywood talking.

‘When Harry got Dunkirk people assumed it was because of who he was, his star power, rather than any real acting talent. But in My Policeman he shines.

‘It’s an incredible performance. All anyone could talk about afterwards was Harry and how he’s likely to get an Oscar nod for this.’

Styles, a member of the boyband One Direction before embarking on a solo pop career, has made no secret of his acting ambitions.

In one interview he said: ‘I like to challenge myself and do something different and movies are definitely where I feel most out of my comfort zone.’

Styles also stars in upcoming drama Don’t Worry Darling. He fell in love with director Olivia Wilde on the set of the £12million film. Ms Wilde, 38, recently made headlines when she was served with child custody papers on stage by a firm representing her exhusband, Ted Lasso actor Jason Sudeikis.

Both My Policeman and Don’t Worry Darling are scheduled to be released later this year.
