Paul’s tribute to pal Lennon as he wows Glasto
SIR Paul McCartney was last night cheered on by his family as he became the oldest performer to headline at Glastonbury.
The 80-year-old’s daughters Stella and Mary were among the crowd at the iconic Pyramid stage to watch his first appearance at the festival since 2004.
Opening the show with the Beatles’ classic Can’t Buy Me Love, the music legend also sang Hey Jude and The Wings’ track Live And Let Die among the 35song marathon that saw him joined on stage by fellow legends Bruce Springsteen and the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl.
As Sir Paul took to the stage he said: ‘It’s so good to be here. We were supposed to be doing this three years ago. So, anyway, we have some old songs, some new songs and some inbetweeners.’
There was also a heartwarming moment when a hologram of his late Beatles bandmate John Lennon shone on the stage.
A source said: ‘Paul wanted it to be amazing. This is a celebration, something he has excitedly, but carefully, put together. He knows this was to be a performance that he and, more importantly, his family would remember for ever.’
Sir Paul arrived at 5pm after being driven from the Somerset hotel where he stayed following a warm-up performance to just 800 fans at the Cheese & Grain venue in Frome on Friday night.
Festival organiser Michael Eavis ensured that his dairy farmers got the best seats for Sir Paul’s set at Glastonbury by shipping in leather couches.
Kate Moss managed to avoid her former fiance Pete Doherty – 17 years after the pair performed a ‘joke’ wedding at the festival. The supermodel, accompanied by stylist James Brown, avoided the VIP area where the Libertines star was ensconced.
Other celebrities at the festival included Sienna Miller, Cate Blanchett and Daisy Lowe.
