Adams brace relieves Ralph and leaves Rodgers reeling

-

SCOTLAND striker Che Adams proved the hero for Southampton as they came from behind to leave Brendan Rodgers’

Leicester winless from their opening three matches.

Former Aberdeen loanee

James Maddison put the Foxes ahead early in the second half, bending a trademark free-kick around the Saints wall and beyond the reach of Danny Ward.

Five minutes later, visiting boss Ralph Hasenhuttl looked to his bench and called on Adams.

Within nine minutes, the Scot had drawn his side level, powering home his effort despite James Justin’s best attempts to keep it out.

Six minutes from time, Saints went ahead. James Ward-Prowse delivered from a wide area and Adams found space to volley home.

Adams paid tribute to Hasenhuttl afterwards, saying: ‘What the manager has instilled in us is to never give up and keep believing. We did that today. First half was tough, in tough conditions, but we stuck in there and got the points.’

The Scot could have had a hattrick but watched his injury-time effort crash back off the post.

Fulham came out on top in a thriller with Brentford, Aleksandar Mitrovic netting with an 89th-minute header to give the Cottagers a 3-2 win.

Marco Silva’s men were 2-0 up after 20 minutes, Bobby Reid and Joao Palhinha putting them on easy street.

However, Christian Norgaard gave the Bees a lifeline just before half-time.

Ivan Toney had a strike ruled out early in the second half but did get on the scoresheet after 71 minutes to level the scores.

However, Fulham would not be denied their first win of the season as Mitrovic rose highest to head home the winner.

Everton remain without a win after scrapping to a 1-1 home draw with Nottingham Forest.

Brennan Johnson put Forest ahead with just nine minutes left but Demerai Gray fired beyond Dean Henderson to rescue a point.

Crystal Palace picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 dismantling of Aston Villa.

Steven Gerrard’s Villans took the lead through Ollie Watkins after five minutes but a brace from Wilfried Zaha and Jean-Phillippe Mateta’s 71st-minute strike sent the Eagles up to 10th.
