Tavernier is correct to call out the stupidity of Morelos
PRAISE be for Rangers captain James Tavernier’s plain speaking after yesterday’s 2-2 draw at Hibs.
Referee Willie Collum’s erratic display may well have been a walking advertisement for the rapid introduction of VAR, but he did get one thing right — the sending-off of Alfredo Morelos for swinging an arm at Marijan Cabraja.
Tavernier called it ‘stupid’. And good on him. Watching Morelos laugh theatrically after red had been flashed just made his idiocy in reducing his team to nine men all the worse. It looked, last season, like Morelos had eliminated this stuff from his game under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
Yet, yesterday was a return to the bad old days with the Colombian, who hasn’t looked right at all since returning from injury.
It is only Morelos who will suffer in the end. He may or may not agree a new contract at Ibrox. But if he goes back to being a liability, he will never get the really big move he craves.
