Miscarriage heartbreak for Olympic star Rebecca

- By Molly Clayton

REBECCA Adlington has revealed that she suffered a miscarriage 12 weeks into her third pregnancy.

The former Olympic swimming champion told her 105,000 Instagram followers yesterday that an ultrasound scan on Tuesday had shown she had lost her pregnancy.

In the social media post, she also said that she had to undergo emergency surgery and has since suffered from sepsis, a kidney infection and a fever.

‘On Tuesday, me and Andy went to hospital for our 12-week scan only to discover we’ve had a miscarriage which resulted in emergency surgery,’ she wrote.

‘I managed to leave hospital Thursday only to be readmitted Friday. After a day of treating sepsis, a kidney infection and a fever I’m slowly on the mend.’

Mother-of-two Rebecca shares her 18-month-old son Albie with her husband Andy Parsons, and her seven-year-old daughter Summer with the professional swimmer Harry Needs, whom she divorced in 2016.

Turning the attention to her husband, Rebecca dubbed him ‘my rock’ as she showed her gratitude for his support throughout the tough process.

She continued: ‘@andrewparsons5 you have been my rock this week. Same with family and friends. We haven’t managed to process it all yet but I know with their support we’ll get through it.’

Rebecca, 33, had not yet announced her pregnancy, although there were some rumours about it in July.

The post, which showed the athlete sitting in a hospital bed with a cup of tea, drew a flood of supportive messages.

Fellow swimmer Ellie Simmonds wrote ‘Sending love’, adding three red heart emojis. Olympian Adam Peaty commented: ‘Sending all my best, so sorry to hear it.’

And broadcaster Orla Chennaoui praised Rebecca for her brave post. She said: ‘I’m so terribly, terribly sorry. So many of us go through this and never talk about it. Your honesty will help so many people. Sending you so much love.’
