Canada’s gun salutes for its new King

-

KING Charles III was officially announced as Canada’s Monarch in a ceremony in Ottawa yesterday attended by the country’s prime minister Justin Trudeau.

The proclamation was issued by Mary Simon, the first indigenous person to hold the office of governor general in Canada, who now represents the King there.

The event, full of pomp and ceremony, concluded with the Chief Herald in distinctive tabard reading the proclamation as the gun salutes punctuate his words.

John Baird, former Canadian foreign minister, said: ‘Charles has got two big problems: one is just the length of his mother’s time as the sovereign, and two about the great success that she had over 70 years. But I think he’s already exceeding expectations.’
