GILMOUR TO BE HONOURED BY EX-BOXERS ASSOCIATION

- By Jim Black

FORMER boxing promoter Tommy Gilmour will be honoured by the British Ex-Boxers Association in London today when he is inducted into their Hall of Fame.

The former St Andrew’s Sporting Club supremo is one of 20 leading figures from the sport being recognised across 11 different categories.

Gilmour is the latest recipient of the promoters award and follows in the footsteps of fellow legends Jack Solomons, Harry Levine, Mickey Duff, Barry Hearn and Frank Warren.

Tragic ring star Michael Watson, whose career was ended by a near-fatal injury sustained in a world super-middleweight title bout against Chris Eubank in 1991, is also being recognised at today’s ceremony for his services to disability sport and other fundraising activities.

Gilmour said: ‘The fact that a legend of the status of Michael Watson is also being inducted at the same time makes it even more special.

‘This honour is up there with any I have received previously, including my awards as world promoter and also world manager of the year.

‘It’s also something else to tell my grandkids, along with meeting the Queen when I was presented with my MBE.

‘Considering I have been retired for five years, I’m surprised that anyone remembered me. In fact, when I was contacted about it, I really thought it was some sort of a wind-up!

‘But I don’t regard this as just a personal honour, it is also recognition for Scottish boxing as a whole because not many promoters from this part of the world have been honoured in this way.’
