KATIE SWAN’S first-ever WTA semi-final ended in heartbreak yesterday after she retired hurt in in Chennai.

The world No174 played some brilliant attacking tennis in her quarter-final, though had numerous medical issues and was sick on court in the match which ended at 3am local time.

She became the seventh British woman to reach a

WTA semi-final this century but was 3-0 down in the first set when she retired hurt against Poland’s Magda Linette.

Meanwhile, Davis Cup captain Leon Smith has defended his team selections after the hosts failed to qualify for the knockouts. ‘Is it controvers­ial to put your two highest-ranked singles players out there? No. We believed it was right,’ he said.
