BURNS COTTAGE, ALLOWAY
iT is the 18th-century home forever linked to scotland’s national bard but, for Jackie, it represents something entirely different – the battle of women being given the right to vote.
she says: ‘The story i find most fascinating about Burns Cottage is its links to the suffragettes and how they once tried to bomb it. i’m glad women got the
vote but i’m also very glad that a couple of suffragettes, ethel and Frances, failed to blow it up and that it’s still there for us to go and see.’
