The drones that f ly UNDER your feet... to inspect miles of sewers

- By Gemma Murphy

A FLEET of ‘drain drones’ is being deployed to take the stink out of Scotland’s smelliest job.

Scottish Water is using remotecontrolled drones to inspect the country’s sewers for cracks, leaks and blockages.

Until now the only way to check the condition of the 33,000 milenetwork has been for inspectors to wade through the tunnels.

But the drones are equipped with cameras and lasers that seek out any defects and allow engineers to monitor every inch of the sewers remotely – while remaining above ground in the fresh air.

Scottish Water official Iain

Jones said: ‘We want to improve the accuracy of our surveys and, for safety reasons, we want to reduce the number of workers needed to carry out survey work inside sewers.

‘The drone does both. We are really excited about it.’
