My Grandparents’ War

As the series in which celebrities look back on their families’ wartime exploits concludes, we come to a particularly moving episode featuring the actor Toby Jones. This star of stage and screen has lit up everything from superhero epics to the cult comedy series Detectorists, but now we see his emotional true self as he responds to astonishing stories about his grandparents Reggie and Doreen Heslewood (right, with Jones inset).

Jones already knew the outlines of Reggie’s war in the Far East, where he faced the Japanese armies in the jungles of India and Burma, but it’s only now that he discovers the physical and mental scars that his grandfather was left with. As for Doreen, her service entertaining the British Army’s troops proves to have been far more dangerous than Jones ever suspected. ★★★★★
