A member of the cabbage family, the leaves and stems of this veg have a mild flavour and are perfect added to stir-fries.
3 PEA ‘METEOR’
Ideal for exposed sites and considered to be the hardiest of all varieties, it forms 12in-tall plants that bear an abundance of small pods.
4 WINTER PURSLANE
Perfect in salads and able to tolerate temperatures down to minus 15C, its heartshaped leaves are extremely juicy, with a mild, sweet flavour.
5 BROAD BEAN ‘AQUADULCE CLAUDIA’
Developed in Spain and introduced in 1844, 3ft-tall plants carry masses of 9in-long pods, below, filled with flat, tender white beans.
