LAST-GASP GOAL IRKS DAVIDSON

- By Gary Keown

CALLUM DAVIDSON has bemoaned the slack defending that cost his side a hard-earned point nearly six minutes into time added on against Celtic.

A late goal from Alex Mitchell looked like seeing Saints earn a draw at home thanks to a spirited late rally, but Drey Wright went down after turning his ankle on the Main Stand touchline with seconds to go and let the visitors steal in to set up Giorgos Giakoumakis for the winner.

Davidson feels the rest of his team should have been more alert after Wright hit the deck, though, and could not disguise his anger after the final whistle.

‘We had a real go in the second half and, in those last couple of minutes, we have to defend better,’ he said. ‘Drey rolled his ankle and we need to switch on to that. It’s a hard lesson to take but I will also take that level of performance against the Old Firm.

‘I will take those energy levels and that commitment and desire to go and try to get something from the game. There are a lot of positives to take but, at the same time, I don’t know if the word is annoyed. I don’t think it’s printable.

‘Celtic are a fantastic team and, if you open up against them, they will carve you open.’

Davidson admitted to being so conscious of Celtic’s constant danger that he didn’t react to Mitchell’s equaliser in the third minute of time added on.

‘I actually didn’t celebrate the goal,’ he said. ‘I didn’t know if it would be wise or not. There was still two minutes to go. I was surprised Mitch had actually scored as it’s the first time he’s hit the target in either training or a game. I’m just really annoyed at how we lost the last goal.’
