WHEN you wake up in the morning, your major organs should be where they were the night before. But not for one 36-year-old woman from Chicago. When she had an X-ray for suspected liver cancer, everything was in the correct position.

But the next day, after severe abdominal pain, a new scan showed that her spleen had moved a foot overnight, from the top of her abdomen to the bottom.

Doctors discovered that she had a liver condition called primary sclerosing cholangitis, which led to blood collecting in the spleen, weakening the ligaments that held it in place. She had to have surgery to put it back.
