Arty folk-horror film set in a village in 19th Century Macedonia. Old Maid Maria, a witch or ‘wolfeateress’, has her eye on a newborn baby but the mother persuades the monstrous Maria to allow her to raise the girl until she’s 16. Years later, Maria takes the now-teenage Nevena to tutor her in the ways of shape-shifting witchery. Different actors play Nevena’s different incarnations, with Noomi Rapace the best known. Director Goran Stolevski is one to watch but it seems unlikely he’ll be hired to direct a light-hearted comedy any time soon. From Thursday
