As part of the BBC’s 100th-anniversar­y celebratio­ns, this epic and eclectic, eight-hour programme recalls events, landmarks and voices, all woven together with classical music from the archive. It begins in the 1920s as music by Janacek and Gershwin is entwined with the words of writer James Joyce (above) and King George V.

The poet and novelist explores his near-death experience following heart failure in John Burnside: From The Other Side (Radio 4, 4.30pm).

Maxine Peake reads Voices In The Valley (Radio 4, 7.45pm), the first in Andrew Michael Hurley’s series of short stories set in an isolated village.
