Munya Chawawa: How To Survive A Dictator

Channel 4, 10pm

-

Born in England, comedian Munya Chawawa (right) grew up in Zimbabwe, and here he presents this idiosyncratic look at the country’s late dictator, Robert Mugabe. His reign began with great hope in 1980 after the transition from white rule in what was Rhodesia, but then came decades of violence, oppression and corruption.

Stymied in his plans to film in Zimbabwe after his visa is cancelled, Chawawa instead travels to South Africa to meet Mugabe’s family and advisers – both those who stayed loyal and others who broke with the tyrant – and to hear from victims of the regime.

It’s a troubling story of ideals dashed, with flashes of Chawawa’s smart wit.

You can see him earlier in Taskmaster (Channel 4, 9pm) as he joins Dara O Briain, Fern Brady, John Kearns and Sarah Millican in comedic battle.
