The Hacienda: The Club That Shook Britain
BBC2, 10.15pm
It’s bonfire night, so perhaps it’s fitting that a documentary about a Manchester nightclub that set a light under the British music industry is hitting our screens.
The Hacienda opened its doors on May 21, 1982 and closed 15 years later, after it fell foul of criminal activity and financial troubles. But the club helped shape the cultural landscape of the decades to come.
Some attendees still get misty-eyed about the venue, which was founded by the band New Order and their label Factory Records.
Several of them pop up to tell their stories here, alongside more famous luminaries, including Peter Hook and Stephen Morris of New Order fame, as well as club regulars Noel Gallagher and Shaun Ryder.
Archive footage (the Happy Mondays’ Bez, right) sets the scene, and we learn more about the iconic venue’s demise. ★★★★★
