Red mist falls on Wolves’ Costa

-

DIEGO COSTA was sent off in stoppagetime in Wolves’ fiery 1-1 draw away to Brentford.

Former Chelsea striker Costa was dismissed after being deemed to headbutt Brentford defender Ben Mee.

It was Bees centre-back Mee that broke the deadlock in the 50th minute for Thomas Frank’s side when he scored from a well-worked short corner.

Wolves hit back two minutes later through Ruben Neves. The midfielder collected a pass from Nelson Semedo and fired the ball past David Raya.

Wolves, who remain in the bottom three, showed grit to hold on for a point but almost conceded in the 80th minute when Ivan Toney headed a glorious chance wide of the target.

There were six yellow cards flashed before Costa was sent off for violent conduct in added time.

Caretaker Wolves boss Steve Davis said: ‘I haven’t watched it back yet, but obviously the ref went over and decided it’s a red card. He’s apologised.’

Elsewhere, Fulham maintained their bright start to the season with a 0-0 draw at home to Everton. Willian came closest to scoring for Fulham when his shot on the turn was saved by Jordan Pickford.
