MATT O’RILEY believes Celtic can break their Champions League duck with a landmark win over Real Madrid in the Bernabeu. Ange Postecoglou’s side will sign off from

European football for the season on

Wednesday night with a trip to face the reigning champions in Spain.

Despite dominating portions of each of their five Group F fixtures against Real, Shakhtar Donetsk and RB Leipzig, they have mustered only two points.

The latest tale of missed chances came during last week’s 1-1 home draw with Shakhtar Donetsk, a result that keeps the Ukrainians in with a chance of making the last 16.

Already through to the knockout stage, Real must win their final game to guarantee top spot but midfielder O’Riley believes Celtic are capable of pulling off a surprise result.

He said: ‘We have to try and win the game because five points looks a lot better than two.

‘Just for the sake of winning a Champions League game against a very high level of opposition like Real Madrid. That would be something for us to tick a box. And I think we can do it.’

Celtic opened their Group F campaign with a visit of Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

They created chances and dominated spells of the game but were undone as Madrid exerted their superiority with goals from Vinicius Jr, Luka Modric and Eden Hazard.

‘Because Real Madrid are such a high-level team it wasn’t really a way to ease ourselves into it,’ added O’Riley.

‘For a lot of us, it was our first experience.

‘That was the benchmark but I still think we went toe-to-toe with those guys. Their experience and ruthlessness was the difference.

‘I had a tour of the Bernebeu when I was younger, when I was at Fulham. Now I am playing there.

‘It’s not just about trying to take part, though, I’d like to win because I think we deserve to.’
