Give video refs the chance to explain their decisions
HERE’S a little idea to keep the brave new world of VAR whizzing along in fine style.
Why not let officials come out after games to explain why they made their decisions after watching the on-screen replays? The SFA selfprotection brigade will no doubt say they tried that years back with the ‘whistleblower’ section on their website and it didn’t work out. But, invariably, that was referees admitting they got things wrong because of what they thought they’d seen happen. This is different. It would have been interesting to hear VAR Steven McLean, for example, explain why he didn’t suggest Michael Smith’s Hearts handball against Celtic last weekend was a penalty. It would inform debate and educate the nation too. What’s not to like?
