Farmers should roll over in vegan sausage debate

-

Vegans seem to have ruffled a few feathers among farmers and retail experts, according to the article last week about demands for a ban on vegan foods containing the words ‘sausage’ and ‘bacon’. The wording only helps customers decide how to cook and eat the products. The meat industry clearly feels threatened.

Non-meat ‘sausages’ and ‘steaks’ have been sold for decades and farmers never seemed to care much before. Why would they? People are in no way confused by such things, so long as they are clearly labelled as vegetarian or vegan. I have never purchased a soy steak by accident, just as I haven’t mistaken oat milk for regular. Customers aren’t stupid.
