Che will hit goal trail, says Saints boss

- By Joe Bernstein

NEW Southampton boss Nathan Jones has promised he can help turn Che Adams into a prolific Premier League marksman.

Jones watched Adams score his sixth goal of the season but also miss a couple of good chances in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Liverpool which kept Saints in the relegation zone.

But the debutant manager is convinced he can improve the Scotland international’s record of 23 league goals in 109 games for the club in order to help them stay in the top flight.

‘Every striker I have worked with scores goals at whatever level,’ said Saints boss Jones, who was hired from Luton last week to replace Ralph

Hasenhuttl. ‘It’s not just lower league and the ones at Luton. It was exactly the same at Brighton (where Jones was a coach); Leo Ulloa, Ashley Barnes, they have all scored.

‘I want us to be a real fluent attacking side that is hard-working and wants to entertain. Fans can’t get behind a team that is easy to beat and concedes three goals every week.’

Adams had already missed a golden opportunity with his head when

Liverpool struck first after six minutes. Andy Robertson’s cross was flicked home by Roberto Firmino.

Saints levelled three minutes later when Adams got across Virgil van Dijk to nod home James Ward-Prowse’s delivery. Darwin Nunez raced onto Harvey Elliott’s pass to restore the hosts’ lead in the 21st minute.

Scotland skipper Robertson was the supplier again when Nunez converted the left-back’s cross just before half-time.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, who had to watch from the stands as he’s serving a touchline ban, said: ‘I’m very pleased and we played well in the first half.’
