VAR is clearing up some home truths

-

SCOTTISH FA chief executive Ian Maxwell set the tone before VAR had even touched our lives when stating that the early period of its introduction to the SPFL Premiership would be ‘horrendous’.

It was a dreadful way to prepare the ground, even though it is steadily being proven true. Even for those of us who believe in the use of technology and have wished for its arrival, the last week or two has been difficult to take.

That reports abound over referees not appearing to trust their own judgment or not even appearing to want to make decisions at all is worrying. That a cameraman missed Jota’s ‘offside’ goal for Celtic at Motherwell during the week is a joke. As those memes on social media state: ‘You only had one job…’.

Celtic have all they need to stay on their high horse and it already feels like we may just be one bad decision away from someone, somewhere mentioning those three magic words: Great. Masonic. Conspiracy.

VAR has certainly provided clarity on a number of things in its short time with us. That proper, full-time referees is the essential next step and that the SFA would have trouble running a bath successfully.
