NO BETTER NO 10 IN WORLD RUGBY

- Jason White FORMER SCOTLAND CAPTAIN

SCOTLAND fans have waited a long time to see Finn Russell in full flow. He was absolutely sensational in this dominant win over Argentina.

That was vintage stuff from Russell yesterday. He was back to his mesmeric best and, on this kind of form, there really isn’t a better 10 in world rugby. He controlled the game quite superbly.

He was rightly named man of the match and I’m sure Gregor Townsend would have been delighted to see the playmaker pulling the strings once again.

We can only hope that Townsend and Russell are in a good place again in terms of their relationship. Just a few weeks ago, Russell was apparently viewed as fourth choice.

But, in reality, that was never the case. He is without question our best fly-half and he has to start for Scotland when the Six Nations come around in the spring.

It’s such a big year of rugby coming up, with the World Cup now less than 12 months away. Whatever Scotland hope to achieve, Russell is key to our ambitions and our chances of doing well.

He absolutely tore Argentina to

shreds yesterday and was heavily involved in near enough every try for Scotland. The Pumas simply couldn’t get near him.

It looked like Argentina might make a contest of it when they scored a try with just 12 men on the field in the second half. Credit where it’s due in terms of them sticking to their task.

But discipline caught up with them in the end.

They just couldn’t stay in the fight long enough and had too many players off the pitch.

Scotland just went through the gears towards the end. It became a really scrappy and ill-disciplined game but Scotland’s quality shone through in the end.

Darcy Graham is without doubt one of the best wingers in the northern hemisphere at the moment. The little fella is in electric form. He just can’t stop scoring tries.

This was a huge result for Townsend. If Scotland had lost, it would have only posed more questions in terms of where we are heading into next year.

But this was a huge result and should give the squad a muchneeded boost going into the Six Nations. The squad need to remember this winning feeling and build on it with confidence.

We’ve had a really mixed bag of results in 2022. But the fans will have left Murrayfield with a smile on their face — and Russell’s magic ensured a positive end to the year.
