Intimidating Iran early key

- Danny MURPHY

IWOULD like to see England start with high intensity against Iran tomorrow. I realise it’ll be hot but we should go after them in the opening 20 minutes regardless. Press the ball and hopefully get the game done early.

We know Iran won’t go toe-for-toe so let’s intimidate them by being on the front foot. Press the ball and try to disrupt the defensive plans of their shrewd and organised manager, Carlos Queiroz.

People will focus on the identity of England’s starting XI but for me the system chosen by Gareth Southgate is more important.

We want to go out with energy and intent. I’ve consistently said a 4-3-3 is best for the group stage. It allows us to have five attacking players on the pitch and they are used to that formation from their clubs. In a 3-4-3, you are relying almost exclusively on your front three to be the match-winners. It feels cautious.

These group games are all about having the right mindset because our individuals are better than what Iran, Wales and USA have.

If we set up right, it doesn’t matter if it’s Saka or Sterling, Grealish or Foden, Mount or Bellingham. Everyone is good enough to seize the initiative given the chance.
