Speed cameras? They’re all about cash, not safety
I read the article last week about speed cameras raking in £250million, with many drivers like myself being fined for marginally exceeding the speed limit by 6mph on a 40mph road. Hardly fair is it? Nothing will ever convince me that it has everything to do with road safety. I’m more convinced now that this is purely about making money.

I’m not surprised speed cameras took £250million in fines last year. Every driver in the country, at some time or another, has crept 5mph over the limit momentarily while concentrating on the road ahead. If they happened to be in view of a camera at the time, they’d be fined £100.

Surely if they’re catching all these speeding drivers, then the number of road fatalities will have gone up as well in proportion. As it hasn’t, maybe this shows us that speeding doesn’t kill.

The motorists who have paid £250million in speeding fines have only themselves to blame. There is a foolproof way to ensure you don’t get fined: don’t exceed the speed limit.

The obvious solution for the individual is to avoid breaking the speed limit. Driving more slowly will also save on fuel costs and create less pollution. People complain about the high price of fuel, but there are plenty of drivers going over 80mph on my local motorway.

This is simple revenue-generation for local government. More people die of drug abuse, but they are too scared to do anything about that. Then there are common crimes like burglary.

As so many people break the antiquated speed limits, they must feel comfortable at the speed they drive at. We need a realistic setting of many speed limits in zero-accident areas.

If speed cameras are indeed safety cameras, then the number of prosecutions for speeding is completely out of proportion with the number of accidents that occur. We are grossly overpolicing speed.

I think it’s great that speed cameras are catching so many poor drivers who speed. I think anyone breaking the speed limit, even by just 1mph, must be fined and receive points on their licence. If you do it more than once, you should be banned.
