AS THE furore rages about its Harry & Meghan series, Netflix has started work on the story of another, much less contentious, Royal romance.

On Friday, the streaming giant recreated the moment Prince William first fell for Kate Middleton at a student fashion show in 2002 as it shot scenes for the next series of The Crown.

It was the first time that Meg Bellamy, the teenage actress who will portray the future Princess of Wales, has been seen on set. She was spotted leaving her dressing room in a dark coat covering an all-black outfit similar to the one Kate wore that fateful day at St Andrews University. Ms Bellamy’s hair, which had been curled, was pinned up ready to be styled like Kate’s waves that night.

The scenes were shot at Royal Holloway, University of London, in Egham, Surrey, with the college’s nightclub, Medicine, the location for the charity fashion show where William paid £200 for a front-row ticket.

When he saw his future wife walking the catwalk in a see-through lace dress revealing her black underwear underneath, she went from being his friend to his love interest. It’s claimed William said: ‘Wow, Kate’s hot.’ Years later, the dress sold for £78,000 at auction.

Ms Bellamy, who won the role after she responded to an open call for people to apply for the coveted part, spent three days filming at Royal Holloway alongside actor Ed McVey who plays Prince William.

Other scenes were recorded in lecture theatres and in the student union bar, decked out with mocked-up leaflets advertising the fancy dress discos that took place at St Andrews, admission £2.

The stars shot scenes depicting William and Kate partying, with extras employed to portray their university friends.

Ms Bellamy, 19, has never acted before and applied for the role after earning an A* for drama in her A-levels at St Crispin’s School in Wokingham, Berkshire. She had previously only taken part in school productions and had a part-time job at Legoland in nearby Windsor.

William and Kate lived just a few doors down from each other at St Salvator’s hall of residence when they were at the Fife university and began socialising with each other, sometimes playing tennis together.

Yesterday, the real Princess of Wales showed off some Christmas spirit in a portrait released to promote her carol concert next week. It showed her in a dazzling red sequinned gown, with sheer embroidered sleeves and a cinched waistline.

The Princess, 40, will host the event in Westminster Abbey in honour of the late Queen on Thursday.

The Prince of Wales, the King and the Queen Consort will also be there.

PS 20 years on, the future Queen is looking much more demure
