Thomson keen to build trophy haul

- By Alison McConnell

MALKY THOMSON is keen to see his Rangers women’s side continue their new-found grip on the Scottish domestic scene by claiming this afternoon’s Sky Sports Cup.

The Ibrox ladies will face Hibs — who have won the gong seven times — at Tynecastle having never laid a finger on the trophy before now. However, while Hibs are seasoned campaigners in this competition and Rangers are in new territory, it is the Ibrox side who are firm favourites given their recent trajectory within the women’s game.

Rangers claimed the league title from Glasgow City last term in a run of games that saw them go through the SWPL season unbeaten. This term they have drawn twice so far but are yet to be defeated domestically.

‘I’m desperate to see exactly where we are going to stand come full-time,’ said Thomson. ‘It’s always good to get that first cup, although we got the Glasgow Cup when we beat Celtic at the start of the season.

‘But this is a special one. Especially with the fact we’ve now gone further in our journey and added European experience — it adds a bit of hype and it will be exciting.’

Thomson believes last season’s title win has only served to increase the hunger for further success within Rangers’ squad.

‘The dynamic changes all the time,’ he said. ‘When you’re trying to win the league title, which we did, it was done in a flash. We’d won it and we’d moved on.

‘Very quickly in this game the dynamic changes. Everybody now wants the trophy off us, so it becomes a different mindset in a sense.

‘We had to really be diligent and detailed in our planning about how we were going to try to retain this one. It’s making sure that every player is in a good head-space, every player is confident, every player is relaxed.

‘These are the small details we do at Rangers — I’m not saying they’re innovative, but that’s the kind of lengths that we’ll go to.’
