WATCH ON MBAPPE

-

SPORTSMAIL take a look at how the Three Lions defence handled the French talisman. While Mbappe was kept mostly quiet by Kyle Walker, it was Olivier Giroud who broke English hearts everywhere.

1st HALF

Even before kick-off there is a huge roar when Mbappe’s name is called out as the teams are announced. He is busy practising his shooting into an empty net and remained focused on his warm-up routine.

3 mins — produces two clever flicks in as many minutes to link play on the left, but does not pose any real threat to the England defence so far.

15 mins — his first real chance at goal, but overhits his curling cross-come-shot which sails past the far post. Two minutes later he is involved in the swift break that leads to France’s opener.

39 mins — wins a free-kick when Henderson ends his run, but when the ball is played back across goal, volleys high over the bar with his left foot.

2nd HALF

As England get on top, Mbappe sees less of the ball, but still poses a threat. Henderson is livid when he goes down far too easily under the Liverpool man’s challenge to win a free-kick. 51 mins — Mbappe turns provider for Giroud with a superb pass to send his teammate in, but the Milan striker fails to control the ball.

59 mins — another blistering run on the left takes him surging past Kyle Walker, who cannot live with his pace. He gets to the byeline and cuts back to Dembele, who should score, but takes the ball away from goal. 78 mins — celebrates with his team-mates as Giroud scores to put France ahead. It seems that Les Bleus are heading for the semi-final, while England are heading to the aiport.
