BEES DEFEAT STINGS SPURS SUPPORT AS ANGER GROWS

- Tottenham 1 Brentford 3 By Matt Barlow

THERE was a fabulous new street mural of Harry Kane to admire and a placatory pre-match message from chairman Daniel Levy but nothing to halt Tottenham’s slide down the garbage chute of this dismal season.

They took hope from the brilliance of Kane before losing their way against committed opposition and crumbling to sounds of protest rumbling around in the stands.

Bryan Mbeumo flipped the game with two goals in 12 minutes at the start of the second half and Yoane Wissa added a third in the 88th minute to secure Brentford’s first win at Tottenham since 1905.

The win moved Thomas Frank’s team to within a point of Spurs with a game to play, albeit it a tough one, at home against Manchester City. Spurs will travel to Leeds on the final day with work still to do if they are to clinch European football.

‘Of course it hurts,’ said acting head coach Ryan Mason of the fans’ booing. ‘It’s understandable because of how the second twothirds of the season have gone.’

Kane had scored a wonderful opener, a free-kick curled into the top corner in the eighth minute. But Brentford were transformed at the interval. Wissa left Clement Lenglet behind with a change of pace and a pass to Mbeumo, who skipped past Ben Davies and finished low past Fraser Forster.

Suddenly, the Bees — without Ivan Toney at the start of his eight-month ban for breaking FA gambling rules — were buzzing.

There were echoes of the first as Mbeumo fired them ahead. This time, a pass by Scotland defender Aaron Hickey, slid between Davies and Lenglet, and another finish with his left foot.

‘Our thoughts are with Ivan and we are aware it is not easy to replace 20 goals in the Premier League,’ said Frank. ‘We actually have good players who can score goals. Every time Wissa plays instead of Ivan, he scores and he is such a threat, but big praise to Bryan.’

Brentford scored their third when Shandon Baptiste found Mbeumo, who squared for Wissa to finish.
