How depressing we must pay to keep Letby alive

-

Sarah Vine’s verdict last week about Lucy Letby and whether the Devil really does walk among us caught my attention. Imagine how the parents of Letby must feel – she was their only child. Either they were clueless, as many were, or they couldn’t believe something was wrong with their daughter. We only have to look at the world we live in. Oh yes, the Devil is well and truly living on planet Earth.

Isn’t it scandalous and nauseous that this evil creature did not attend court to hear the verdict and impact statements. Justice is a two-way street. It’s depressing that the British taxpayer will be keeping Letby alive.

How more fitting would it be if that money was spent on intensive care baby units or support for bereaved parents?

Detective Sergeant Danielle Stonier, who questioned Lucy Letby, must have had the patience of a saint. How she stayed calm when speaking to a monster like her, who didn’t show any emotion or remorse at all, is beyond me.

A growing trend in court seems to be that the guilty party refuses to face their judgment at the end of the trial. In my opinion, they should be dragged to the dock.

Vine was very well written. I totally agree with the judge who dealt Letby a whole-life sentence in prison.

However, I feel her life may be short-lived once she meets her fellow inmates.

It was very clever of Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes to assign each baby who had died their own detective, as revealed by The Mail on Sunday last week. It was probably one of the reasons they managed to crack the case.

It must have been extremely difficult to continue the investigation after realising a neonatal nurse had done this awful thing. These officers should be given their own unit called the competent, professional, courageous and intelligent force.

It’s so incomprehensible that this is even real. It must be horrifically real for the families of the babies, but I still cannot conceive of how someone could do this.

It is not at all surprising that the SNP is struggling for funds with debts of more than £800,000 as contributions and revenue dry up from all sources. The main reason for this is not the lengthy police investigation or its miserable performance as a government but its coalition with the Marxist Green Party which is hell-bent on closing down Scottish business.

The news that the Scottish taxpayer could be on the hook for £25 million, the cost of a new purpose-built pier for Papa Westray, Orkney, is alarming. Didn’t the ferry operators for Orkney Islands Council do a feasibility study into what type of ferry, a replacement for another older ferry, could use the existing pier facilities, or did they just follow CalMac’s shambolic approach to replacement ferries? We can surely only hope that any future ferries are compatible with existing piers etc, or we are in for more money badly spent.

The fact that Prince William did not attend the women’s football World Cup final, but Spain’s Queen Letizia and her daughter Princess Sofia made the effort, shows he is not fit to represent them as FA president. A new body should be formed with a worthy female president – Dame Kelly Holmes springs to mind.
