‘WE’RE NOW HUNGRY TO START RACKING UP MORE TROPHIES’
DUJON STERLING has vowed that Rangers are ready to start racking up trophies under new manager Philippe Clement.
Fresh from lifting the Viaplay Cup last weekend, the Ibrox side return to league duty at Motherwell this afternoon looking to cut the gap on leaders Celtic to two points.
Clement’s side have two games in hand over the champions and, having tasted success at Hampden, Sterling believes the team has adopted the ruthless mentality of winners.
He said: ‘Winning the cup means we are hungry for more trophies by the end of the season. Now we have one, but the ambition is to get more.
‘I think you can see when we come in for training every day that everyone is in a happier place. There are good spirits all around the building. Hopefully, that just continues.’
Signed by Michael Beale as a right-back, Sterling has been refashioned as a central midfielder under Clement.
Last weekend, he was named man of the match for his performance against Aberdeen and credits the Belgian boss for helping transforming the mood at Ibrox.
He continued: ‘He plays a big part, but it is also a collective by the team, buying in to what he says about what he wants us to do and executing it on the pitch. That’s why we are unbeaten under him.’
After defeating Real Betis to qualify for the last 16 of the Europa League and then lifting the first domestic trophy of the season a few days later, Sterling believes Rangers deserve credit for maintaining their concentration to defeat St Johnstone in midweek.
‘Wednesday could have gone wrong if we had switched off and hadn’t focused,’ he added.
‘It is about taking each game at a time and trying to deliver the three points. It will be the same at Motherwell. It is a different task, a different game, different players, but we are still the same team.’
