Lily’s Bacchanalian birthday – in £10,000 outfit

- By Jo Macfarlane

IT WAS in Rome that Lily James was caught canoodling with married The Crown actor Dominic West.

So where better to host her bacchanalian 35th birthday party than at London’s most exclusive private members’ club, the Greco Roman-themed Apollo’s Muse?

The Surrey-born actress, star of Pam & Tommy and Downton Abbey, was spotted leaving the celebrations in the heart of Mayfair in an £8,000 outfit which paid fashionable homage to the club’s opulent interiors.

Pairing a £4,639 Yves Saint Laurent toga-style dress with gold Jimmy Choo Saeda sandals (£875), Ms James also carried a £2,500 Dolce & Gabbana Black Devotion shoulder bag and draped an unusual Burberry raincoat, with a white lining, around her shoulders. A new trench coat from the British luxury brand costs around £2,000.

Flanked by two men in cream suits, Ms James, whose birthday was on Friday, left the club in the early hours of yesterday with her close friend, The Creator actress Gemma Chan.

A photograph uploaded to Ms James’s Instagram stories before the event featured an image of her posing in the outfit, surrounded by flowers and balloons, and a happy birthday message from former Spice Girl Emma Bunton. Other guests at the celebrations included magician Dynamo.

Apollo’s Muse is marketed as ‘the most private of private members’ clubs’ and is tucked away at the back of Mayfair’s Bacchanalia restaurant. Only 500 people are granted membership, making it one of the most exclusive clubs in the world. Designed by Richard Caring, the billionaire club mogul behind Annabel’s and The Ivy, it is frequented by famous names including model Kate Moss.
