CROWDS TURNED OUT FOR MEMORABLE DAY

-

THOUSANDS gathered at a town’s war memorial to pay tribute to those who gave their lives on the battlefields. Families, community leaders, and veterans stood side-by-side at Leek’s iconic Nicholson War Memorial as the area fell silent on Remembrance Day. The day began with a service at St Edward’s Church before a parade led by the 2nd Leek Scouts headed along Stockwell Street towards the memorial. All roads leading into the centre were closed off as thousands packed out the town to mark 100 years since the Great War ended. Among those in attendance were members of the Royal British Legion, councillors and members of the armed forces and the emergency services. After the service many organisations in the town laid wreaths in memory of those who lost their lives in conflicts around the world during the last 100 years. Leek Salvation Army Band provided the music for the occasion and the service was led by The Reverend Nigel Irons. Leek Town mayor Roy Tomkinson served in the Royal Navy as a chief petty officer. He said: “The turnout has been marvellous. The people of Leek have done the town proud.” Leader of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, Sybil Ralphs MBE, said: “It was wonderful to see so many young people present at the Nicholson War Memorial service. “It is overwhelming and I was very touched to see such a large crowd of people.”
