- Phil Sherwin Buildbase FA Trophy PHIL SHERWIN

NEWCASTLE Town produced a superb comeback to draw 2-2 at home to Workington after being 2-0 down with less than half an hour to play in their second round qualifying match.

Workington took the lead in the 11th minute when Conor Tinnion netted with a 25-yard shot into the corner of the net. Workington were then awarded a penalty after a foul by Matt Johnson. Johnson then produced a superb save from Jason Walker’s spot-kick and also the follow up to keep his side in the game.

Three minutes before the break though, Gari Rowntree scored with a long-range shot to put Workington seemingly on the way to the next round.

Castle poured forward after the break and pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute when Taylor Attrell scored with a shot from the wing that deceived the keeper. The home side levelled four minutes from time when Matt Lowe headed home a corner to provoke much celebrating among the fans. The replay takes place tomorrow evening. STAFFORD RANGERS lost their Trophy tie 4-0 at Basford United. Zak Goodson (6, 17), Kieren Fenton (19) and Liam Hearn (90pen) were the scorers for Basford. NANTWICH TOWN closed the gap to Evo-stik Premier Division leaders Scarborough to just two points after a marvellous 4-1 win at North Ferriby United.

The Dabbers went in front in the 12th minute when a good cross by Jamie Morgan was slotted home by Callum Saunders. Nine minutes later Nantwich were awarded a penalty when Saunders was upended in the area and Danny Glover sent keeper Lewis Exall the wrong way from the spot.

Nantwich continued to press and they added a third goal in the 33rd minute. Sean Cooke had an effort blocked and Joel Stair made no mistake from the rebound. Two minutes later North Ferriby pulled a goal back when Thomas Waudby scored from a corner taken by Charlie Dunkerley.

A floodlight failure held play up for five minutes, but when the lights were restored Nantwich scored again in the 67th minute. Good link up play between Morgan and Cooke saw the latter set up Glover to tap home his second goal of the game.

KIDSGROVE ATHLETIC extended their good run to only one defeat in 13 games after a 0-0 draw at Mossley.

Logan Jeffs shot wide for the hosts and then Ant Malbon fired a speculative 30-yard effort just off target in the 20th minute. The closest Grove came to breaking the deadlock was in the 67th minute when Chris Baker chipped Ben Purdham, only to see his effort bounce off the top of the crossbar. The result leaves Grove in ninth place, one behind Mossley.

LEEK TOWN slipped to a 1-0 home defeat by league leaders Atherton Collieries, their third 1-0 defeat in a row.

Atherton went in front in the fourth minute as Jordan Cover laid the ball off to Tom Bentham and he slid it into the bottom corner past Danny Roberts.

Blues hit back as Marc Grocott had a shot tipped over by Greg Hartley. Tim Grice had a header saved and then glanced a header just wide. He came even closer in the 75th minute when Aaron Bott headed the ball across goal and he hit an overhead kick that clipped the bar.
