‘WE WERE TRYING TO LIFT THE CAR OFF THE INJURED MAN’

Collision victim suffers ‘serious injuries’

WITNESSES have told how they rushed to help a man who remains in hospital with ‘serious injuries’ after he was struck by a car.

Former paramedic Mike Mulroy was among those who tried to help the man in his 60s after he was involved in a collision with a Toyota Auris in Church Street, Stoke, at around 2pm on Wednesday.

The 46-year-old, right, says a group of people were already trying to free the man from under the vehicle when he rushed to the scene with 18-year-old son Chris.

Mike, of Leek, said: “I was sat in the pub when I saw everyone looking outside. There was a group of guys trying to lift the car off the man.

“It was right by the pedestrian crossing and I went out with my son Chris. I’m an ex-paramedic and we’re both first aiders so I tried to look after him and not move his head.

“Chris was on the phone guiding the ambulance service.

“People came out to help from all over. The staff from Wrights Pies came and brought their first aid kit with some towels. There was a group trying to lift the car, and because it was on his legs it suggests it was only a low speed collision.”

While both Mike and Chris are both qualified first aid instructors, Mike says he hopes anyone would be willing to help in a similar situation. Mike added: “I hope the man makes a full recovery now. I didn’t rush over because I was an ex-paramedic but because we wanted to help someone who was in distress.

“If it was a member of my family then I would want someone to go over and help them.” Staffordshire Police are now hoping anyone who witnessed the collision will come forward.

A police spokesman said: “The man is still in hospital with serious injuries but his condition is described as stable. There have not been any arrests, it is a case of the investigation is still ongoing.”

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman added: “We treated a man who suffered serious injuries and he was treated at the scene before being taken to a major trauma centre at Royal Stoke University Hospital.” ■ Witnesses should call the police on 101, quoting incident number 336 of December 5.
