MUSIC fans can enjoy food and drinks while listening to their favourite tunes - after a bar swapped sport for songs. Independent Music Bar and Grill has opened in Ironmarket, Newcastle, and its walls are decked out with music icons spanning various decades – plus a menu its owners hope will hit the right note.

The venue – which has replaced Brooklyns Sports Bar & Grill – has a bar downstairs with seating areas; and an upstairs room that can be hired for private events.

It offers brunch from 11am featuring the ‘Stokie Oakie’ – a 13-inch oatcake bellybuster with bacon, egg, mushrooms, cheese and sausage.

There are also lunch and evening menus and customers can enjoy a range of real ales, gins, and two-for-one cocktails.

General manager Kevin Milner says the venue has been given a fresh look after replacing Brooklyns – and it enjoyed its official launch party on Saturday.

He said: “This is a music bar, so we’ve swapped the sports photographs on the walls with photos of music stars from the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s.

“We want to cover all eras of music in our bar. We are planning on having themed music nights such as 70s and 80s nights, and drag nights, so we can be a bit different.

“We chose a music theme because other bars in Newcastle cater for younger people so there’s nowhere for people our age to go.

“Hopefully, we can be that place where people can come and get dressed up and enjoy listening to music from their era.”

The launch night featured a live set from local DJ Trevor M, who was a resident DJ at Hanley’s The Place. He was joined by son Trevor Junior.
