Green looking forward to return to Crewe colours

-

PAUL Green admits it’s been ‘tough’ watching Crewe Alex from the sidelines, and says he can’t wait to get back in action and lend a hand. The midfielder has been injured since August, when he picked up a knee ligament injury at Carlisle.

Since then, the 35-year-old has watched most Crewe games, as they have struggled to find consistency and currently lie 15th in League Two.

Now Green is planning on taking part in an under-23s match on Monday and, if all goes well, could return before the new year.

The ex-ireland international says his return can’t come soon enough.

Green said: “It’s tough watching the games week in, week out. Not being involved is the toughest part of it.

“It would be nice to get involved as soon as possible, but I’ve got to make sure I’m right.

“When I got injured I was just thinking to myself ‘can we be there or thereabouts coming into the Christmas period and new year’, maybe kick on from there.

“You think you’re back in the pack and then you drop off again, it’s just getting that back-to-back games with the consistency we need to really move up that league.”

He added: “After the 2-0 win over Cambridge, (the loss to Oldham) was a bit tough to take.

“I thought it was a great game to play in, Oldham were only one point above us and it could have give us a good kick going into Christmas.

“The lads are disappointed in themselves and working hard to put it right.”

Green, who was a big success on loan from Oldham in the second half of last season, penned a one-year deal with Crewe in the summer, with an option for a further 12 months.

Despite his advancing years, he is known to be amongst the most committed and enthusiastic players at the Alex, and he has no intention of slowing down now.

Green said: “If I’m playing well I’d like to think I can show I warrant a new contract, but first and foremost I want to make sure I’m fit and raring to go.

“What more can you want than doing a job you love? There are not many people who can say that and while I’m enjoying it I’ll keep doing it.”

Crewe are back in action this afternoon when they make the long trip south to take on Exeter City.
