NANTWICH RECOVER TO STAY TOP OF THE TABLE

- Phil Sherwin

NATNWICH Town extended their lead at the top of the Evo-stik Premier Division to six points by coming from behind to win 2-1 at Hyde United.

Like everywhere else the wet and windy conditions made life difficult, but it was Hyde who took a 19thminute lead.

Nicky Platt sent over a cross to the far post where Grant Roberts headed past Will Jaaskelainen into the roof of the net.

The Dabbers drew level from the penalty spot three minutes before the break. Sean Cooke burrowed his way into the box only to be brought down by Dominic Smalley.

Nantwich had missed penalties in their last two games, but Cooke made no mistake, smashing it past Peter Crook.

Nantwich almost went in front soon after the break when Jamie Morgan hit a dipping shot from 20 yards that Crook did well to save.

Nantwich did go in front on the hour mark when a shot by Cooke hit Jordan Fagbola and was diverted into the net for an own goal.

Joe Malkin thought he had added a third goal for Nantwich when he converted a Morgan cross but he was flagged offside.

In the 90th minute the floodlights on one side failed, but sensibly the referee let play continue as the Dabbers extended their good run to one defeat in 18 league matches.

JAKE Charles scored a hat-trick to help STAFFORD RANGERS to a 4-1 home victory over Hednesford Town.

Charles opened his account in the third minute, but Hednesford levelled through Michael Howard three minutes later.

Joe Cuff nosed Rangers ahead in the 40th minute, before Charles (57 & 67) rounded off the scoring.

IN Evo-stik West Division, LEEK TOWN moved into seventh place with their third successive league win, 3-2 at Droylsden.

The Blues went in front in the 11th minute when a through-ball by Niall Maguire saw Tim Grice have a shot parried by Chris Thompson, only for Grice to steer the rebound home, the fifth successive league game in which he has found the net.

Rather against the run of play the home side levelled a minute before the break when Liam Caddick converted a cross.

Droylsden went in front from the penalty spot in the 54th minute. Niall Green was penalised for a foul and Sefton Gonzales converted the spot-kick.

Just a minute later, though, Leek were level when Rob Stevenson sent over a low cross from the right and Jordan Johnson turned the ball into the net.

Barely two more minutes had elapsed when Leek won it. They were awarded a penalty and Grice thumped the ball home for his 11 th goal of the season. NEWCASTLE TOWN turned in a superb performance to register their biggest win since August 2017 as they thrashed Market Drayton Town 6-2 at the Red Industries Stadium.

Castle went in front in the 18th minute when a Rod Orlando-young cross was volleyed home by Kyle Stubbs, but two minutes later Drayton levelled when Harvey Howell scored from a corner.

James Steele restored Castle’s lead in the 27th minute with a good finish, but Howell made it 2-2 eight minutes later by heading home a free-kick.

Castle then put their foot down and Chris Smith put them ahead again four minutes before half-time and they never looked back.

Orlando-young blasted home a 25-yard shot in the 64th minute and Smith made it 5-2 in the 77th .

Matt Lowe rounded it off with a sixth goal five minutes from time. Newcastle have lost just once in their last 12 league games.

KIDSGROVE ATHLETIC did well to come back from promotion-chasing Trafford with a goalless draw.

Early on Ant Malbon forced Matt Cooper into a sprawling save, but Rumineo could only fire the rebound over the bar. Lee Williamson also shot over.

Five minutes after the break Ant Malbon hit the outside of the post, but despite dominating play Trafford almost snatched a winner.

A cross was headed away by Grove keeper Dominic Kurasik and when it fell to former Nantwich striker Aaron Burns, his goal-bound shot struck a team-mate.
