BANNED motorist Christopher Greensmith gave his brother’s name to the police after being caught driving while disqualified - with his sibling being hit with points.

The 39-year-old was pulled over in Longton earlier this year and gave the details of brother Craig Greensmith, whose car he was driving, to officers.

And Stoke-on-trent Crown Court heard Craig received six points on his licence which caused problems with his employment.

Fiona Cortese, prosecuting, said Greensmith was stopped on Kendrick Street on July 16.

She said: “He’s 39 years of age he has six convictions for driving whilst disqualified, most recently in 2016 and 2017, and seven convictions for using a vehicle without insurance.

“His last appearance in court was in November for handling stolen goods.”

The defendant, of Kirkup Walk, Longton, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.

Arif Hussain, mitigating, told the court that the defendant had settled down for the first time and is addressing his addiction to drugs.

Mr Hussain said: “He lives with his mother and is doing what the court requires him to do to address his addiction to drugs for the last time and he seems somewhat settled down.”

Greensmith was handed a 12-month jail term.

Recorder Martin Wasik said: “Your brother has points on his licence which has impacted on his job and so there have been consequences as a result of what you did and it’s a serious matter.

“Driving while disqualified is serious because you have six previous convictions for the same offence and driving while disqualified places the public at risk.”
