ANGRY Jake Taylor grabbed his ex-girlfriend by the throat and pinned her up against a wall during a prolonged assault.

The 22-year-old attacked his victim during an argument and, when she managed to get out of the house, he grabbed her by the hair and took her back inside to assault her again.

Magistrates at North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard Taylor and the victim had been in an on-off relationship for around a year before splitting up.

Prosecutor Ruth Bentley said they were still living together in Tean when the incident happened on October 30.

Miss Bentley said: “The defendant was throwing the injured party’s items around. He was swearing and shouting that he wanted her to leave. She said she would go.

“He continued to throw items around. They ended up pushing and shoving each other. She threatened to call his mum, which made him angry.

“The defendant grabbed her and threw her on the bed. He held her by the hair while trying to grab the phone from her.

“He grabbed her by the throat with both hands, strangling her so she could hardly breathe. She described him as being in a fit of rage.”

The court heard the victim got away and left the house wearing her pyjamas, but was chased by Taylor.

Miss Bentley said: “He told her to get into the house because she was making him angrier. He walked her to the house, holding her by the hair.

“He locked the door and drew the curtains.

“He grabbed her by the throat, pinning her against a wall.”

Magistrates were told the victim eventually got away and ran to a nearby Co-op. She had suffered minor injuries.

Taylor, now of no fixed address, was arrested and – despite the victim making a retraction statement – pleaded guilty to assault by beating.

Richard Oldroyd, mitigating, said: “The best mitigation is that there was a retraction statement from the victim but he still pleaded guilty.”

The court heard the relationship between Taylor and the victim was over, but they would stay in contact because she was pregnant with his child.

Magistrates described the incident as a ‘nasty assault, which was sustained over a period of time’.

They sentenced Taylor to 18 weeks in prison and ordered him to pay £100 compensation to the victim. A restraining order prohibiting him from contacting her for six months – other than via a solicitor – was also imposed.
