‘Speaker exacted glorious revenge’

- S.J. BROOM HANLEY

WHAT a wonderful thing to see Parliament ‘take back control’ over this incompetent government due to the courage of the Speaker, John Bercow.

Now Theresa May has been forced to reach out to Labour for support for her seemingly doomed Brexit deal, with protection for the environment, animals and workers’ rights now on the table.

But surely it’s too little too late to get a majority for her deal. So, what next, will she resign? Will article 50 be paused? Will we crash out with no deal?

Well, thanks to John Bercow’s intervention, less time will be wasted now, and Theresa May will have to come back with plan B much quicker.

For too long May has ignored the House, and her executive ministers have gone out of their way to dismiss Parliament concerns.

Anyone not dancing to their tune they detest, especially the Speaker, who on Wednesday enjoyed exacting his revenge.

If the government had not bullied him until he set a date for an earlier stepdown, he may not have been so bold.

But I think Bercow will go down in history as an extraordinary Speaker who was not a puppet for the very rich right wing.

For Brexit is, at its heart, a swing from compromise to right wing dictatorship. This, of course, was resisted at May’s snap election, and her minority government is as shattered as this country.
