A POPULAR town centre nightclub has been put up for sale.

Raphaels Nightclub has been banging out tunes on Congleton’s High Street since 1992, and is now on the market due to the current owner’s ‘business and family commitments’.

It has room for 300 revellers and employs 11 people.

A host of popular musicians – including Swedish DJ Basshunter and Liverpudlian duo Ultrabeat – have played at the club.

A description of the property from estate agent Knightsbridge said: “Over the years, the business has proven to be very popular within the area.

“It sees a high level of loyal and regular customers come through the door on a weekly basis.

“There is huge scope for growth by opening through the week and potentially offering comedy or band nights.

“Our client is offering the business for sale due to other business and family commitments.”

The first-floor club boasts a reception, large bar area, DJ booth and toilets.

It is estimated to have an annual turnover of £271,000 – resulting in an £80,000-a-year profit.

But families fear nightclubs could have had their day.

Claire Howell, aged 35, of Congleton, said: “I have lived in Congleton since 2015 and I have been once.

“It was early in the evening, it was quite quiet, the drinks were dirt cheap and I stayed about an hour.

“I do not think there is any interest in nightclubs anymore. I think people prefer pubs and bars.”

Rachel Hughes, aged 42, of Alsager, added: “I have been in there once and it was a bit grotty. Nightclubs have had their day.

“It is a bit of a shame as you are limited where you can have a dance and a boogie.”

Winston Lewis, aged 34, of Congleton, said: “I am not surprised it is being sold.

“I am told it was absolutely booming at one point, but I suppose in those days it was the only place you could get a late drink.

“Most places now serve until midnight or 1am so people do not have to go to clubs.”

The club currently operates between 10.30pm and 4am on Friday and Saturday nights.
