A MINIATURE Jack Russell was left with a collapsed lung and internal bleeding – after being attacked by a Japanese Akita at a block of flats.

Eleven-year-old Lexi was going for a walk with co-owner Tracey Kennett when the pair spotted the bigger dog in the communal area of the complex in Henderson Grove, Meir.

Sarah Wood, who co-owns Lexi with flat-mate Tracey, said the Akita ‘ran towards’ her pet and started ‘chewing and ripping her’.

The police were called and Lexi was taken to the PDSA vets in Stoke. Now the Akita is set to be rehomed. Sarah, aged 33, said Tracey and Lexi were heading down the stairs next to the communal area when the attack happened at 10.30am last Friday.

She said: “As they got to the bottom of the stairs to turn the corner there was a Japanese Akita just standing there within the communal area.

“As soon as Lexi got to the bottom of the stairs and turned the corner she started reversing back because she saw the dog before Tracey got to the bottom of the stairs.

“It ran towards Tracey and Lexi and started chewing her and ripping her all around the communal area.

“When Tracey got to the bottom of the step our dog was already in the other dog’s mouth.

“I heard everybody screaming so I ran downstairs. As I got to the bottom of the stairs I slipped on a pool of blood where Lexi had been chucked against the glass.

“She was shocked and shaking, it was horrible to see. I scooped her up and ran inside.”

Sarah rang the police and the PDSA pet hospital in Stoke – where she took Lexi to treat her wounds.

The attack left Lexi with a collapsed lung and internal bleeding. There was blood in her urine and she had multiple teeth punctures on her body. Her neck and stomach also suffered severe wounds.

X-rays showed the Akita had just missed Lexi’s lung. The Jack Russell was allowed home on Saturday with antibiotics and painkillers.

Sarah added: “All of the holes where she had been bitten were left open so the blood was pouring out at home and we had to keep wiping it all up.

“She daren’t go out now. Every time we open the door you have to pick her up and she cries. We have a cat as well and she backs away from the cat.

“I am traumatised by what’s happened. I had to sign a form at the PDSA to say that if she didn’t come through the sedation, she was in so much pain that they would put her to sleep. I left the vets thinking they are going to put my dog to sleep and a couple of hours later they said she had pulled through.”

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: “Police were called to a property on Henderson Grove around 11am on Friday, October 2 following reports of a dog attack.

“A dog attacked a smaller dog in a communal hallway. The dog is being rehomed.”
