WHITE SHOWS RED-BALL CLASS TO SECURE NEW PRO CONTRACT

- CHRIS TRAVERS

CHESHIRE seamer Jack White has signed a new two-year contract with Northamptonshire.

The 28-year-old initially moved to Wantage Road in the 2019 season, but injury prevented him from showcasing his talents. He made up for lost time this summer, though, after being handed his first-class debut in the Bob Willis Trophy. Kendal-born White finished with 13 wickets in four matches, including eight in one game against Glamorgan.

His efforts have now been rewarded with a new deal, which ties him to Northamptonshire until the end of the 2022 season. “I’m really happy to have signed a new contract, as an unknown player to turn up injured last year and not be able to show what I can do was hard to deal with,” White told Northamptonshire’s website. “But I worked very hard with Lorks [strength and conditioning coach, Chris Lorkin] in the gym for months over the break to make sure when I was fit I could make an impact.” Bowling coach Chris Liddle added: “Jack’s enjoyed a good run this year in the Bob Willis Trophy and he really grew into regular first-class cricket.

“He’s been brilliant to work with and has a real hunger and desire to keep improving his game.

“We’re building a really strong and competitive bowling unit across all formats and it’s great Jack is remaining part of that.” Right-arm quick White, who plays his club cricket for Cheshire County League side Timperley, previously featured for Cumberland on the minor counties circuit. He moved to play for Cheshire in 2016 and last appeared for the county in 2018.

White’s appearances for Northamptonshire have been limited to the four-day arena with no 50-over cricket being played this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. And White believes when that format does resume, he will be able to deliver in his strongest suit.

He explained: “I’d say my strongest format is 50-over cricket, but we obviously didn’t play any of that this year unfortunately. “Everybody in the squad wants to contribute and play in all forms of the game and I’m no different, hopefully I’ll get a crack at that next year.”
