TUESDAY’S performance at Wigan had given John Askey plenty of food for thought and was hugely influential in his starting selection.

I was surprised to see Luke Joyce left out and with the 4-4-2 formation. Unfortunately, Vale’s twoman midfield of Burgess and Whitehead were over-run with the visitors’ Callum Guy being the most influential midfielder on the pitch.

The Vale looked threatening at times, particularly with the ball out wide and Devante Rodney should have given us an early lead from Montano’s super cross.

Tom Pope should also have given us the lead from the penalty spot following good work by Dave Worrall, but then Carlisle went up the other end and scored - and that was that.

The Vale were second to the ball and never looked like scoring. Robinson showed little and I would have taken him off instead of Pope. The subs made no difference yet again and a season that started brightly is in danger of getting away from us unless we have more than the one effort on target recorded in the last three league games.

WELL, where to begin to sum that up? Too many changes, the lack of creativity, the missed chances, that really was as dire as it comes. The game was so open, with Carlisle coming at us, and usually those are the games we thrive on.

A bright start, soon petered out into a disjointed performance, topped off with two golden chances missed. Since the Exeter game we have had three shots on target in the league and come up with no goals. We could have played until Christmas next year and we would never have scored.

Devante Rodney won’t miss an easier chance in his career, and Tom Pope’s penalty miss capped off yet another frustrating afternoon watching the Vale.

It will be interesting to see what happens between now and next Saturday, even if it is only five matches in, we can’t afford to see ourselves staring down a third straight league defeat.

ANDREW BLAKEMORE,

Denford IT was very disappointing. I was surprised at the team selection. It was virtually a 4-2-4 with having two wide men and two central strikers.

I was also surprised Luke Joyce and Tom Conlon were left out. I think the win at Wigan cost us this game because it changed the manager’s thinking after we beat them so easily. Carlisle fully deserved it, we couldn’t argue, but we had two great chances.

After they scored, it was just a question of whether they would score more goals. This gives the manager food for thought for next week. It was a very bad day at the office, but more worrying is we haven’t scored for three league games.
