ABBEY HULTON AND STONE BREAK NEW VASE GROUND

- Phil Sherwin

ABBEY HULTON UNITED and STONE OLD ALLEYNIANS both made it through to the first round of the FA Vase for the first time.

Abbey Hulton came back from a goal down to beat Ashby Ivanhoe 3-1 at Drayton-beaumont Park.

Ashby went in front in the 10th minute when Sam Grouse did well on the right before pulling the ball back for Jordan Wilson to beat a man and slot into the net.

Soon afterwards they almost doubled their lead when a Liam Donaghy free-kick was tipped over by Joe Mellor.

Abbey came out for the second half with renewed vigour and levelled in the 47th minute through Kieran Lazenby.

Wilson hit the post for Ashby, but Kristian Parsons put Abbey ahead for the first time in the 64th minute.

Matt Harrison added a third goal in the 76th minute and their domination continued as they had a goal disallowed for a foul.

Abbey also bank £725 in prize money.

STONE OA earned their place in the next round with a 2-0 victory at Dudley Town.

Stone’s Adam Alcock made a good save, but it was the visitors who took a 38th-minute lead when Sam Wilson scored with a shot from close range.

They doubled their advantage two minutes into the second period.

Luke Askey challenged for a high ball which dropped to Matt Thomas to drill it into the net from the edge of the box.

Dudley’s hopes of a comeback effectively ended when one of their central defenders was sent off for a reckless challenge.

UTTOXETER TOWN exited the competition following a 3-1 home defeat by Stourport Swifts.

Jack Watts gave the Swifts a 20thminute lead when he poked home a low cross from the left.

Jack Hassall almost levelled for Uttoxeter when his cross clipped the post.

Stourport doubled their lead from the penalty spot eight minutes before the break after Drew Canavan had been brought down and Watts scored.

On the stroke of half-time Uttoxeter had a chance to get back into it when they were awarded a penalty of their own, but Dougie Price’s effort was saved by Dominic Richards.

James Curley pulled a goal back for Uttoxeter in the 70th minute when he nodded home his 10th of the campaign, but three minutes later Bailey Fuller made the final score 3-1 to the visitors. Uttoxeter were just left with the £225 losers’ prize.

STAFFORD RANGERS remain next to the bottom of the Northern Premier League top-flight table after a 2-0 home defeat by Hyde United.

Joe Cuff had a couple of efforts for the Boro early on, but the game changed in the 33rd minute.

Hyde striker Tom Pratt raced clear only to be brought down in the area by Dan Burns, which resulted in a penalty and a red card for the Rangers defender.

Paddy Lane scored the spot-kick to leave Stafford with an uphill task.

Mo Sebbeh-njie fired wide for the 10 men before a second half of few chances.

Lewis King made a couple of good saves in the Boro goal, but Hyde sealed the points in the last minute.

A powerful cross found Chinedu

Uche six yards from goal and his shot took a deflection on its way past King.

The Nantwich Town v Atherton Collieries game was postponed due to Covid restrictions.

IN the South East Division, NEWCASTLE TOWN produced a superb display to demolish Carlton Town 6-1 at the Red Industries Stadium - their biggest win since beating Spalding United by the same scoreline in August 2017.

The game had a bizarre opening

spell as Newcastle were awarded three penalties in the first 25 minutes.

Harvey Howell was brought down in the box in the 12th minute and former Vale youngster Joe Berks, pictured, scored the spot-kick.

Three minutes later Carlton were level when Daryll Thomas headed home at the far post.

Castle were awarded their second penalty in the 22nd minute when James Melhado was brought down.

Jack Steggles saved from Berks

that time, but from the resulting corner a handball in the box remarkably saw Newcastle given a third spot-kick.

Ryan Mclean took that one and made no mistake. It was 3-1 in the 58th minute when Berks burst into the box after being set up by Howell and slotted past Steggles.

They scored a fourth in the 69 th minute when good work by Mclean led to a ball in the box that was finished off by Maxwell Chimenes.

Newcastle didn’t ease up and a fifth goal arrived in the 83rd minute. Nathan Morley made himself some room down the right and then unleashed a shot from distance that flew into the net.

The icing on the cake came a minute from time when Ethan Vale hit an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box.

LEEK TOWN won a cracking encounter 3-2 against Cleethorpes Town, despite being behind twice.

Cleethorpes went in front two minutes before the interval when a corner wasn’t cleared and Alhagu Touray-sisay fired the ball past Danny Roberts.

The referee originally gave a penalty for handball but then

changed his mind. Almost immediately afterwards Cleethorpes were reduced to 10 men when Josh Venney was shown a straight red card for a bad challenge.

The Blues equalised in the 52nd minute when Rob Stevenson cut in from the right and beat a couple of defenders before finding the

net with a low shot. Former Port Vale midfielder Harry Middleton restored Cleethorpes’ lead in the 63rd minute when he fired a 25yard free-kick into the net via a deflection.

Leek poured forward and were awarded a penalty for a foul in the 77th minute.

Theo Richardson parried the spot-kick, but Will Saxon was on hand to bury the loose ball to make the score 2-2.

Saxon then turned provider in the 84th minute as his cross from the right was knocked into the net by Tim Grice.

The referee consulted with his linesman over a suspicion of handball, but gave the goal to the delight of the Leek contingent.

KIDSGROVE ATHLETIC remain unbeaten in the league after a hard-fought goalless draw at Glossop North End.

In a first half of few chances Josh Thorpe headed a Kyle Diskin corner over the bar.

After the break it was Thorpe again who came closest to opening the deadlock when he headed a Diskin cross against the bar in the 70th minute.

If anyone was going to win it, it was the Grove, and in time added on Glossop keeper Dale Latham dropped the ball and Ben Chesters took it around him only for Devon Matthews to clear his subsequent shot off the line.

IN Midland League Division One, STAFFORD TOWN were beaten 4-3 at Heath Hayes.

Hayes took the lead in the 21st minute through former Stafford Rangers striker Nick Wellecomme and they added a second seven minutes before the interval from the penalty spot.

Keeper Thomas Horsley committed a foul and Jack Edwards duly scored.

Wellecomme scored his second of the game just after the hour mark to put Hayes well in control.

Stafford hit back in the 74th minute though when a free-kick was lofted into the box and Anwar Olugbon headed home.

Stafford then poured forward and three minutes later Tom Duffy headed a corner into the net to set up a grandstand finish.

As they sought a leveller Heath Hayes made the game safe in the 89th minute through Aaron O’neill.

As the game entered time added on Stafford scored again when Olugbon hit the post and Nathan Scott netted the rebound.
