DRUNKEN Dominic Goodwin pushed his friend off a bar stool – after downing nine pints of lager.

The 25-year-old reacted after his mate said Goodwin’s son’s life would turn out like his as they drank in the Market Tavern, Hanley.

He pushed him and the man fell off his bar stool and banged his head on the floor, causing a minor cut.

Now Goodwin has been handed a 12-month conditional discharge at North Staffordshire Justice Centre.

Prosecutor Simon Dykes said the men are good friends and spent July 30 drinking.

But things turned sour at 6.30pm when, after both had drank nine pints of Fosters lager, the victim suspected Goodwin was ‘under the influence of other substances’.

Mr Dykes said: “Goodwin approached the other man and pushed him off the bar stool. He banged his head on the floor, causing a minor cut. The victim did not really remember what happened.

“The police were contacted by security. CCTV was obtained. Goodwin made full and frank admissions to pushing the man off the chair causing him to bang his head.”

Goodwin, of the Lyme Trust, London Road, Newcastle, pleaded guilty to assault by beating.

Tony Cooke, mitigating, conceded it was an unpleasant incident.

He said: “It was an impulsive push. They had been out that day. The defendant has a son. The defendant has not made the best of his life. He wants differently for his son.

“He will say the person he assaulted said his son’s life was going to turn out like his. He pushed him off the chair. It was an impulsive action. It was one blow.”

Goodwin must pay £257 in compensation, costs and charges.
