A DOG walker died in Stoke-ontrent’s main hospital two days after collapsing.

David Gibson was out on the walk when he fell to the ground on April 1.

The 56-year-old – from Moss Green Village – never fully recovered and passed away at the Royal Stoke University Hospital. The telecommunications supervisor died as a result of heart failure.

An inquest has this week heard that David had two stents fitted in 2019 when he suffered a cardiac arrest. He also had diabetes and epilepsy.

Royal Stoke consultant cardiologist Dr Rob Butler told the inquest: “He was under review and last seen in 2020. He arrived at A&E at 8.11pm on April 1. He had a clear myocardial infarction and was ventilated. I felt it was unlikely he would survive the night.

“On April 3, he had a cardiac arrest. He was under general anaesthetic and underwent an operation.

“A temporary pacemaker was inserted but he continued to decline. Given the cardiogenic shock the left anterior stent was blocked and he died in the lab.”

Consultant cardiologist Dr Ted Lowe added: “He went into a cardiac arrest on April 3 and was resuscitated.

The stents in the heart were blocked, I recommended a temporary pacing wire.

“He was transferred to the lab and the temporary pacemaker was inserted successfully. He remained very poorly. One of his stents was blocked. I attempted to unblock it but his condition continued to deteriorate.”

North Staffordshire assistant coroner Duncan Ritchie has concluded that David died from natural causes.

He said: “Mr Gibson died on the operating table. It’s clear he had a significant medical history and had suffered previous heart attacks. The operation was necessary to save his life. Sadly, they were not successful. His death was caused by heart failure and he died from natural causes.”
